Taking on SA's only 4 level interchange

SNA Civil and Structural Engineers The EB Cloete Interchange near Durban is known as the 'spaghetti junction' of South Africa. Two very busy roads intersect at this junction and a four level stack interchange was chosen to serve the high volumes of traffic. This is the only 4 level interchange in South Africa.

Senior Roads Technician Minnesh Parmanand of SNA Civil & Structural Engineers (Pty) Ltd has been involved in the upgrade of the EB Cloete interchange and explains the importance of the software in such a large scale project:

"The upgrade of the EB Cloete interchange in Durban and the approaches to EB Cloete interchange involved surface repair, drainage and widening of all ramps and two national freeways across a four level interchange as well as three adjacent major interchanges.

Civil Designer 2014 allowed for an efficient analysis of all the critical factors and enabled a cost effective design process to be delivered within a short time-frame."

Feature Focus

The Sewer module now incorporates pressure flow into the analysis options so that you may model the network under surcharge conditions. Sewer can analyse a complex system of branches with surge tanks and overflows thereby enabling you to model the intricate networks that are typical of modern cities.

Each model may have multiple sub-networks and outfalls. You may specify the outfall levels if you wish to connect to existing systems. The analysis will determine the best possible levels, slopes and pipe sizes in accordance with the design parameters.

Showcase - Sewer Extension

Sewage Pump Station When eThekwini Municipality, with the help of Hatch Goba (Pty) Ltd, set about moving the old Mahatma Gandhi Road Sewage Pump Station to a site adjacent to the north shaft of the recently commissioned Durban Harbour Tunnel, 250m from its original position, they evaluated all the various possible sewer pipe extension installation options.

The result was the installation of a 221m micro-tunnel which took 24 days to complete. The project is unique and innovative as it was the first of its kind in South Africa regarding size, length and curved environment. Read more here.
