The Top 500 Nationally

|

Technologist Shaun Nel landed on the door step of
Africon Consulting Engineers eleven years ago to do
his Civil Engineering in-service training. Today,
Shaun is still actively involved at the company and
is proud to be an employee of the organization.

"The company has been nominated as
one of the top 500 companies in South Africa because
of their contribution to the growth of the economy and
their job creation initiatives. They are also ranked
number one in the Consulting Engineering sector.
Africon is a really great company to work for,”
explains Shaun.
Shaun studied his Civil Engineering qualification at
Port Elizabeth and then pursued his BTech with a
specialisation in water. His varied roles at Africon
Engineering include being the RE on projects, doing
site work and performing design and supervision
activities.
Many of Shaun’s projects at Africon are
multidisciplinary and incorporate all the major
services. These range from roads design, to stormwater,
sewer and water projects. One of the current projects
that Shaun is currently working on is the Bosburg Golf
Course.
“This multidisciplinary venture required extensive use
of Civil Designer’s Roads, Stormwater and Sewer
modules. The software handles assignments like these
really well and allows us to detect service clashes in
no time. The project is an upmarket, exclusive
development situated behind the Bosburg Mountain, so
there is literally no wind. It’s a sought after
development and the erven are already up for sale,” he
explains.
“This was my first golf course and I found it to be
very interesting. The 18-hole golf course had 500
erven and included an eco estate with a fully equipped
spa. The full spectrum of the project involved the
installation of bulk services as well as the
construction of various dams for irrigation.”

"The preliminary designs on the
project will be complete at the end of the year,
followed by a two year construction period," he says.
A project of a different kind and which was
successfully completed is the Logistics Park Phase I
venture. This multidisciplinary project required a
dual carriageway and bulk sewer and water services.
“The Logistics Park is a motor industrial park and
consists of a concentration of vehicle manufacturers
and suppliers.”
“The project required the construction of a road
reserve in the park and was handled by Africon in a
joint venture with PD Naidoo & Associates. We handled
the design of the dual carriageway road while PD
Naidoo & Associates handled the services. The project
was completed in December 2005 and continues to give
me a great sense of achievement whenever I drive
through the park,” he explains.
With the scope of multidisciplinary projects, there is
never an opportunity to get bored. It is also this
variety and challenge that keeps Shaun routed at
Africon. “I enjoy the stimulation and challenge of
solving civil engineering problems and finding cost
effective design solutions. To me, the job in itself
is a reward. There is also no better company than
Africon to grow and develop as an engineer,” says
Shaun.
