Raising the Bar in Infrastructure Design

Many of our clients were interested to read, in a previous newsletter, how a senior Roads Technician at Mott MacDonald used Civil Designer 2014 to create 50km of road in one model with 47 intersections. In this edition, we're proud to include another account of just how Civil Designer has raised the bar in infrastructure design:

Windfarm Access Roads Project
Civil Designer 2014 was recently put to the test by Infrastructure Technologist Adnan Petersen and Oryan Africa at Gibb Engineering and Architecture, and they had this to say about it:

Windfarm project"The latest Civil Designer 2014 allowed the completion of preliminary quantities on 97.1km of gravel access roads on various Windfarm projects. The project also included modelling of all intersections, lay-by areas and platforms at designated points along the routes."

They explained that "the modelling of the 97.1km stretch of road took a 2 man team only 3 days to complete. This included the setting up and preparation for the new 'String Roads Regression' extraction. The various elements of the design including the evaluation of the vertical grade for the special vehicles traversing on the access roads varied depending on the quality of the survey and usually took about 3 hrs to evaluate. By applying a typical design intersection template, and using the new tool available, Civil Designer took about 2 hrs to create all 36 intersections per Windfarm, which was amazing."

The software was essential for the following aspects of the project:
  • Evaluation of the existing natural ground levels and applying vertical, horizontal and super elevation of the alignment in terms of the design criteria set out by the requirements of the specialised vehicles traversing there on;
  • Evaluation of the cut and fill slopes;
  • Assessment of the design to determine suitablility of alignment where design criteria's were unable to be met;
  • Platform design incorporated in the road alignment;
  • Determining and Evaluating Cut and Fill Quantities, Un-Adjusted and Adjusted;

What's New in the Survey & Terrain module

Strings Based Earthworks Design
Civil Designer's strings based earthworks design functionality now supports child strings on both side of the master string, for more flexibility in the design of complex platforms.

Survey Point Screening
Civil Designer's Manual and Automatic Screening functionality allows the intelligent reduction of the number of points in a large data sets by, specifiable height tolerances and point proximities.

Raw Survey Point Name Classification
This feature is particularly useful when working with DTM data from LiDAR surveys. Civil Designer will sequentially name points with optional feature line between renamed points to allow easy classification of raw survey data. Survey points can also automatically be named within a specified distance from CAD lines, arcs or polylines, in order to identify features such as road centre lines, road edges, shoulder break point lines, toe lines etc.

Faster triangulation algorithm also handles larger data sets
Intelli-Line break line generation allows you to use cheap computer time to define the model features by survey point names, instead of slow and painful manual breakline definition. Thereafter fill in the rest of the site in a matter of seconds. Alternatively use the lightning fast triangulation (3 million points in 100 seconds) for more uniform sites.

Convert multiple 3D polylines to DTM
Civil Designer will create DTM points using the z-coordinates of 3D polylines. If you have a 3D drawing, it is no longer necessary to process each polyline one by one. You can simply select multiple entities, or process an entire CAD layer.

Powerful DTM
Civil Designer's DTM engine is the strongest in the industry. You won't experience issues with modelling & breaklines changing for no reason from the original validated DTM after importing. We can further handle 95 million points with ease. DTM redraws have been optimised to be super fast and there has been an increase in 20% redraw speed in the latest version.

Fast Accurate DTM Line Model Creation
Civil Designer will now create an accurate DTM model with break or feature lines from a CAD drawing and an associated survey. The new model is generated from only the survey points at the beginning and end of each CAD line and is stored in its' own new destination surface.

Convert 2D CAD lines to 3D CAD Lines
Civil Designer will now convert 2D CAD lines to 3D CAD Lines by draping the original CAD lines on associated DTM surface to determine the new third dimension's elevations.

Supports ASCII, Booker, Logger, WILD, GeoDos, Ceaser and Sokkia
We support many different data formats (field books) that can be imported into Civil Designer. Terrain point co-ordinates may also be exported to total stations or to WILD equipment. All ASCII file imports have been made super fast and multiple ASCII files can be imported into the DTM in one operation.


Feature Focus - STORM

SUPPORTS ILLUDAS, RATIONAL AND EPA SWMM 5.1 RUNOFF MODELS
The Illudas Time-Area method is used for the estimation of runoff from a uniformly distributed design storm. The results correspond satisfactorily with observed runoff events for the method to be an accurate and useful design tool. The Rational Method is implemented as described in the National Transport Commission Road Drainage Manual, with an additional option to specify specific point rainfall for each subcatchment.

The EPA Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is a dynamic rainfall-runoff simulation model used for single event or long-term (continuous) simulation of runoff quantity and quality from primarily urban areas. The runoff component of SWMM operates on a collection of subcatchment areas that receive precipitation and generate runoff and pollutant loads. The routing portion of SWMM transports this runoff through a system of pipes, channels, storage/treatment devices, pumps, and regulators. SWMM tracks the quantity and quality of runoff generated within each subcatchment, and the flow rate, flow depth, and quality of water in each pipe and channel during a simulation period comprised of multiple time steps.

DTI grant for BEE companies
