Bellville based Tritan Survey trading as Matt Pepe &
Associates was commissioned for the assessment of
areas, which include Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique and
Tanzania. “We travel about twice a year to a different
centre and see quite a bit of Africa that way,” says
Matt Pepe, owner of Tritan Survey.
Local workers were employed on the project, which
proved problematic at times due to language barriers
and lack of experience. Pepe said that their team
spent a large amount of time demonstrating tasks to
the local workforce during the venture and adds that
the use of Civil Designer software, developed by
software house Knowledge Base allowed them to perform
calculations quickly, thereby helping to speed up the
process.
Closer to home, Tritan Survey was involved with some
of the bigger engineering firms on retail centres in
the Paarl and Worcester areas and participated in the
surveying of the new additions to Tygervalley Centre
in Bellville. |
STOCKPILING
Apart from the land surveys for shopping centres and
retailers, Pepe is heavily involved in undertaking
volume calculations on the stockpiles for the three
big Lafarge quarries in the Cape Town region. These
include the ones at Eersteriver, Saldanha and
Tygerberg hills.
“The stockpiles are surveyed four times a year and
each pile is measured independently as they consist of
different grades of stone,” says Pepe. “First the
ground surface - which never changes, is measured and
stored as layer 1. We then measure each stockpile of
stone and there can be as many as 50 stockpiles per
quarry”.
“With Civil Designer the volume of stockpiles is
measured in just a couple of hours, making it a
pleasure to work on any survey project,” says Pepe. |
