THE EXPORT FUNCTION IN MAP
In the last Civil Designer newsletter, we explored the
import function in the MAP module. In this week’s
feature, we take a closer look at how to Export in MAP.
You can import and export Arcview SHP files, MapInfo
MID/MIF files and even Regis Feature files quickly and
effectively. MAP calculates the length, perimeter and
area of entities automatically and you will have full
control over the way that themes are displayed as well
as the redraw order of themes.
Exporting to CAD
To export an existing theme as CAD elements to a new CAD
layer, go to Export in the File menu and select ‘Export
to CAD’. Only data from the chosen theme that is
currently visible on the screen will be selected. This
means that if you have zoomed in to such an extent that
some of the theme data is off screen, off the screen
information will not be exported.
You can choose your theme in the ‘Select Theme’ dialog
and click OK to continue. You will then be prompted for
the layer name on which to record the exported data.
Once you have completed the relevant information, click
OK to proceed. Data from the chosen theme will now be
exported to the selected CAD layer and the Windows File
‘Save As’ dialog will be displayed to allow you the
opportunity to save your drawing.
Exporting to GIS
To export theme data to another GIS system, go to Export
in the File menu and select ‘Export to GIS’. MAP
supports both ReGIS Feature as well as ArcView Shape
Files. You can also select multiple themes for a single
export.
Each export file is handled differently. When exporting
a ReGIS Feature File, all themes are written into the
named export file. With the export of ArcView Shape
Files, when you select a single theme for the export,
the named export file is used. If you however select
multiple themes the file names will consist of the
original export file name, an underscore, and the name
of the theme.
To indicate which type of data you would like to export,
go to the ‘Export Type’ dialog box. Once you have
completed the relevant information, click on the OK
button to continue. The standard Windows’ Save dialog
will now be displayed so that you can enter the name of
the export file and save it.
You can select one or more themes for export in the
‘Select Theme’ dialog and then click on the OK button to
continue. Use Shift and Left click to select / deselect
a range, or Control and Left click to select / deselect
individual themes. Once this is done, the export will be
carried out.
This easy exchange of data allows you to use MAP as an
editor for ArcView and MapInfo users and may also be
used as a management system that compliments our design
modules.
