SUPPORTING WOMEN IN ENGINEERING
 |
The first 'South African Women in Engineering' event took place on 26 August and was in the form of a one day conference and networking dinner. The conference saw 100 top female UCT engineering students from all the engineering disciplines participate in interactive forums which sought to re-ignite
|
the engineering flame in students, showcase the opportunities within the engineering industry, and prevent the loss of female engineering students to other industries. Besides lending assistance with the recruitment of women engineers in the industry, the conference aims to provide mentorship for students in order to bridge the gap between the university environment and the engineering industry.
Based on the phenomenal success of this years event, Knowledge Base will be supporting the 2007 nationwide search for the top female engineering students in the country. This process will help students secure vital vacation work as well as employment once they have graduated, ensuring the retention of engineers in South Africa.

CADASTRAL SURVEYING MADE EASY IN SURVEY & TERRAIN
|
The Survey & Terrain module is the primary module used by Land Surveyors. It is a digital terrain modeling module that provides interactive earthworks design and calculations as well as complex survey calculations. The program allows electronic input of data and supports a variety of formats.

In addition, the module can convert distances, areas and volumes and has a Unit Conversion Dialog Box that allows the user to select the appropriate conversion. For example, it has predetermined conversion factors to convert Cape Feet to Cape Roods to the standard metre. It also allows for a user defined conversion factor. The program contains a number of transformations between different projection systems. In order to transform from one plane to another, the application requires that at least three points with coordinates in the original system and the target system, are available. This is then used to determine the 2 dimensional transformation parameters.
If coordinates are not available on both systems, then transformation parameters must be presented. With either method, the program will lead you through the process using a series of dialog boxes. The new transformed points are then stored in a separate ASCII file. Points can also be transferred on a batch basis. In the Survey & Terrain module there is general interoperability between the functions as imported survey measurements and coordinates can be recalled from the imported data as well as computed data, making this module a preferred choice.
