Engineers from the UK based Mott MacDonald, the second largest consultancy in the world, recently attended a Civil Designer training workshop with the aim of using the program's Design Centre, Survey & Terrain and Roads modules in their engineering departments. The software will be used in various

projects across Africa, Asia, Asia Pacific, Asia Subcontinent, Australasia, Central & South America, Europe, the Middle East and North America. National Training Manager Cedric McKenzie conducted the training course in Cambridge from 12 to 16 February and reports that the training was positively received by all.

Attendees on the course worked on an existing project called the Wing Project, a 40 kilometer pipeline works, and produced the Longitudinal Sections of the first and second sections. Seen in the picture are Mott MacDonald engineers Andrew Jordaan and Darren Murphy.

Civil Designer's Water module allows the manipulation of water entities according to groups. Groups are essentially permanent selection sets and can be thought of in the same way as layers in a drawing.

Groups can be created by moving selected entities into a new group. An example of using groups would be in separating quantities relating to a bulk line and the number of villages included in the project. The procedure would be as follows:

Divide the water entities into groups according to those belonging to the bulk infrastructure and each of the villages;

In the Settings | Selection Filters option, select a group for which you want to calculate Quantities;

Open the Quantities dialog and select the option 'Selected Only' to view only a summary for that group;

Another example would be to divide water entities according to a phased development. In this case, in addition to separating quantities, the system could also be hydraulically analysed for each phase separately. Groups in the Water Module provides a highly effective tool for organising your data.
