ENTERING DEMANDS IN THE WATER MODULE
It can be a very time consuming and laborious task to enter node
demands one at a time. For each node, one would need to
establish a number of connected consumers or stands, multiply
that with per capita demand, convert to litres per second and
then enter it into an appropriate edit box. With Civil Designer
however, there is a much easier method of entering demands.
In residential areas, demands can be established according to
stand areas, while reticulation pipelines are fairly evenly
distributed along the area. Demands can therefore be distributed
according to pipe lengths with sufficient accuracy.
When you
distribute demands in the Water module, it is only necessary to
establish total demand in the network using a number of people
and per capita demand, or measured consumption for existing
networks using the menu option “Adjust Demands” in the Data
menu. Choose the option “Demand to distribute (l/s)” and enter
the appropriate amount. The program will now automatically
assign demands for each node proportionally to the lengths of
the adjoining pipes. What could take hours of tedious work is
now completed in a matter of seconds!
Sometimes, certain parts of the network can have different per
area demands. This is the case with low-income suburbs located
next to a high-income area. In these instances, total demands
should be established individually for each part of the network
and the appropriate pipes and nodes should be selected. When you
check the box “Selected area only” the software will distribute
only the entered demand to the selected part of the network.
This procedure can be repeated for further parts of the network.
Additional demands for schools, shops etc should be entered
manually afterwards.

Graham Webster
Africon PE Engineering Representative |
“This is where a
program like Civil Designer is particularly helpful, as it could
handle our numerous changes with absolute ease. In theory, we
could do the design on site on a laptop, draw in the design
criteria, survey it and then peg points according to
requirements.” Graham Webster, Engineering Representative at
Africon PE.
