CIVIL DESIGNER FOR UNIVERSITY OF STELLENBOSCH
In keeping abreast of current industry standards, the University of Stellenbosch has recently decided to incorporate Civil Designer as their medium of choice when executing their Civil Engineering course. The civil programme covers subjects from the traditional civil engineering disciplines, such as Water Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation as well as Geotechnical Engineering. There is also a special focus in the areas of water resources, transportation, pavement engineering and reliability analysis.

Students were introduced to the program by means of an interactive technical demonstration which was held on Tuesday 8 August.

ROADS FOR THE AFRICAN RENAISSANCE
|
 |
The 3rd IRF/SARF Regional Conference for Africa will be taking place on the 11th – 13th September 2006 at the ICC in Durban.
The conference is being jointly hosted by the International Road Federation (IRF) |
based in Geneva Switzerland, and the South African Road Federation (SARF), and its relevance to Africa’s development and future wellbeing cannot be overstated.
As the leading global organization devoted to the promotion of roads and the roads sector worldwide, the IRF is represented in more than 80 countries. Every four years it holds an international conference on a different continent to address regional road issues pertinent to that continent. This year it’s Africa’s turn, and during the week beginning September 11 some of the world’s leading authorities and decision makers on road development will focus their attention on equipping Africa with a much improved road network.
Knowledge Base looks forward to meeting you there, come and introduce yourself to us at Stand 24.

Translating a roads design to a DTM surface
A roads model can be translated easily and accurately by selecting the 'Alignment / Horizontal / Cross Sections / Translate' option and then specifying the correct Layer and Surface. You then select the 'Roads Model' option and press OK. The program will allow you to switch on the newly created DTM surface to check the results.
Working with Cross Sections is just as easy. You can indicate features such as Fence Lines, Telephone Poles or Pipes on your Cross Section Drawings. You can also extract cross section points from a surveyed feature, plot cross sections with symbols and height the cross section points.
When extracting cross sections from a DTM feature, select the option 'Alignment / Horizontal / Cross Sections / Extract' and then choose the correct surface and layer.

Once you have checked the 'Apply DTM point filter' check box, the point filter dialog will appear. You can use the filter to specify what DTM data to use when extracting cross sections. Also specify a Section ID for the extracted cross section points. Press OK. The program will extract cross sections from break lines only in cases where the break lines are connecting to the points specified in the DTM point filter. To view the cross sections, select the option 'Section / Graphical Edit'.
The improved functionality in Civil Designer's Roads module makes the generation of plans, long sections and cross sections easy and takes the hassle out of road design and route planning.

TECH TIP TUTORIAL
Geometry Lines
Geometry consists of construction lines and circles. These can be used as guide lines which can be traced over using the Geometry Trace-Over functions. This allows the user to determine the positions of points, line and arc intersection points and the projection of existing lines to another part of the drawing.

FREE STATE DEVELOPMENTS
“We used Civil Designer to design the horizontal and vertical alignments and found the program especially useful in calculating the cut and fill volumes in the development of the road. I have worked with the software since the days of Stardust and the program has just grown from strength to strength”
