TERRACES IN SURVEY & TERRAIN
Terraces may be created in a number of ways.
These include graphically defining the
corner coordinates, typing in the
coordinates, or even importing an ASCII file
that contain just the terrace coordinates.
You can also generate the terrace banks and
toe points with variable slopes by
specifying the bank criteria. If you want to
change the terrace layout, simply drag it to
another position.
To define the position of the terrace,
switch to Survey mode by selecting ‘Mode,
Survey Mode’ or by clicking on the Survey
button in the mode toolbar. You can input
the corner points by selecting the ‘Editing,
Enter Point’ option and accepting the values
as displayed in the Constants Details
dialog. Make sure that only ‘Screen output’
is selected in the Output Manager dialog to
output the data to the screen and click OK.
The terrace corner points may now be entered
into the Point Entry dialog.
Once you have added all the co-ordinates,
click Close to exit and refresh the display
by pressing [S]. If you want to connect the
corner points by means of break lines,
switch to Terrain mode and select the ‘Model
- Add Break Lines’ option.
Terrace volumes may be calculated by
clicking on the terrace in question and
making the calculation of individual terrace
volumes on a multi-terrace site a snap. You
can also balance the cut and fill volumes
with the optimization function. Use the
‘Terrain - Terrace Volumes’ menu option to
activate the Terrace Layer Details dialog.
Indicate the terrace by clicking on one of
the corners. To generate the plot, select
the ‘Plot - Generate’ menu option. The plot
will now be displayed together with the
terrace in a CAD window.
Design terraces may be stored in any one of
128 surfaces which means that you can switch
between different ‘what-if’ scenarios and
calculate the difference in volume in each
case. Once the design has been finalized,
you can merge the terrace with the
underlying ground profile to create a final
site model in a matter of seconds!

THE GREAT SKY AROUND THE BIG HOLE
Don't worry be happy! The title of a hit
song that was on everybody's lips a decade
or so ago sums up Dirk Potgieter's approach
to life and work. "We don't have problems,"
he says repeatedly. Nothing seems to faze
him.
"We work in a wide circle around Kimberley,
roughly 200km in any direction," he says in
his quiet unhurried manner. The countryside
in the Northern Cape, of which Kimberley is
the capital, is harsh and scrubby...
