Transformation in the Industry |
| |

While the proportion of qualifications awarded to black and women graduates has increased substantially, a key area of concern is that the majority of these qualifications are still at a relatively low level.
By 2004 black graduates were best represented in the Engineering Sciences and Humanities field and worst represented in the Engineering Sciences and Technology pool. Despite these alarming trends, the proportion of women graduates in South Africa increased from 41% to 48% in 2004 with women graduates in Engineering Sciences and Technology up from 10% in 1994. Vela VKE Engineers has recently appointed Viwe Qegu as the first woman on their board of consulting engineers as a non-executive director with other companies following suit. With initiatives like these, it is clear that the process of transformation has already begun and is starting to reflect positively in current figures.

Generating Child Strings
Civil Designer allows you to create a 'child' string at a horizontal and vertical off set from the original. Alternatively, it can extend down to a DTM surface at a certain grade. A child string can also be added at a given height with varying slopes from its parent string. It then 'belongs' to the original string in a hierarchical way.
The relationship between the string and its parent can be edited using the 'Range Editing' option in the Range Edit dialog box. Once you have entered all your details simply convert the strings to DTM points so that it can be viewed in a 3D format.
