Product News &
Information

THE MAP MODULE IN CIVIL DESIGNER
MAP is a fast and easy to use Geographic Information
System that has largely been designed for local
authorities, government bodies, non-government
bodies and all others who need to represent physical
entities with an associated database of information.
In this weeks newsletter we explore how you can
import various GIS and CAD related data into your
existing project with minimum effort.
Importing from GIS
You can import a file from another GIS system by
selecting Import - GIS in the File menu. This option
allows you to import data into your current project
from an alternative GIS source. Civil Designer
supports the following GIS systems: DOS AllyMAP
Boundary; DOS AllyMAP Link ID; DOS AllyMAP Segment
ID; DOS AllyMAP Object, DOS AllyMAP Point, ReGIS
Feature File and ArcView Shape File.
In the “GIS Import Type” dialog, select the required
data type and click Next to proceed. The “Import
File” dialog page will now be displayed. Complete
the relevant data and click Next. This will prompt
the “Import Theme” page so that you can complete the
relevant data before selecting the Finish button. If
the name of the new theme is the same as that of an
existing theme then the program will prompt you to
return to the "Import Theme" page so that you can
change the name of the theme.
Importing from CAD
You can create or update a theme with data from CAD
elements as the full range of point, line and region
themes will be supported. To import a CAD layer, go
to File and select the "Import from CAD” dialog.
Complete the relevant data and click Next to
proceed. If you choose to select a new theme, the
“Create Table” dialog will be displayed. Complete
the relevant data and click Next. When selecting
your data options, you can choose raw data or
polylines with IDs. Once the relevant data has been
completed, click the Finish button.
This easy exchange of data allows you to use MAP as
an editor for ArcView and Mapinfo users and will
double up as a powerful management system that
compliments any Civil Designer module. Watch out for
the next Civil Designer newsletter where we will be
discussing the Exporting function in the MAP module!

BUSINESS WARRIORS - GET YOUR PAIA DOCUMENTS
(Applicable to South African Business Owners only)
Some of you may already have heard about the
Promotion of Access to Information Act, otherwise
known as PAIA. But did you know, that if you do not
submit a Section 51 Manual to the South African
Human Rights Commission by 31 August 2005 that you
could be held liable for a fine or even jailed? In
order to avoid such criminal judgement, you will be
expected to:
-
draft a Section 51 manual for your businesses and
trusts;
-
submit this to the SA Human Rights Commission;
-
post it on your website - if you have one;
-
and submit it to any professional body that you
are a member of.
Since we know how valuable time is, we have included
a useful information resource in the form of
Business Warriors that you could access when
completing your Section 51 manual. When you join the
Business Warrior community, you get advanced
warning about any legislation that is likely to
impact on the SME environment. You will also receive
the PAIA Section 51 Manual with each registration.

SPARKLES WITH NEW KIMBERLEY PRISON
"You
are, at this moment, standing right in the middle of
your own ''acres of diamonds,'' said Earl
Nightingale to his audience. He was talking about
finding and taking the opportunities around us. The
new Kimberley prison that will house some 3000
inmates is a big project by any standards and
represents a sparkling opportunity for Eddie Schön
and Copad Engineers to really shine.
