Knowledge Base Courses Awaiting CPD Validation

From 2006, Continual Professional Development (CPD) becomes compulsory for all categories of registration with ECSA including engineers, technologists and technicians. This impacts on engineering professionals specifically because over a five year period, each registered individual must achieve 25 credits in order to retain their professional registration.

The first batch of renewals will be done by ECSA in January 2007 and those registered individuals whose registration is due for renewal will have to earn 5 credits during 2006 in order to successfully maintain their registration in 2007.

If requirements are not met, then professional registration will not be renewed. This has serious implications for the sector as certain work becomes reserved for registered professionals only.

Knowledge Base Interview on ECTV

Vincent Bester participated in the discussion forum alongside other experts in the industry and was given the opportunity to explain the role of AllyCAD and Civil Designer in the design and execution of engineering projects. The SAACE Engineering and Construction Channel (ECTV) was launched in February and was designed to meet the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs of engineers in category one of the Engineering Council of South Africa’s (ECSA) policy on CPD.

New Pipes Database Functionality

The pipes database routine enables the creation of multiple databases which can contain information regarding different pipe services. Data can therefore be examined across Sewer pipes, Stormwater culverts, Water networks, electrical layouts, telecommunication cables and other pipe services for example.

The pipe databases can be used to indicate crossing positions of pipes and cables on Road, Sewer, Storm and Water Long Sections as well as the Road Vertical Alignment view. The databases can also be used when running the Pipe Clashes routine.

ASCII data in various formats can be imported into the Pipe Database spreadsheet. Once imported the ASCII data can be organised in the Fixed Column dialog which allows the user to sort the data according to the appropriate Filed name for each column.

It is also possible to import pipes from drawing entities into the Pipe Database spreadsheet. Each line entity in a selected layer can be extracted as a pipe and the text on the specified layer closest to the end points of the pipe will be imported as the invert levels.

The new Pipes Database Functionality allows you to optimise design performance and productivity by using your pipe services design data more effectively.
