3D Fly Path

This Tech Tip explains how to create a 3D fly path of a road. The steps in the following tech tip:

Convert the final road levels into a DTM surface need to be completed before proceeding.

Terrain Mode:

Defining the Fly Path

Terrain Menu › 3D View › Define Fly Path

Specify the Base surface, the Terrace surface (which is the translated road cross section surface). The Eye height, view radius and speed can also be set.

In this example we will be using the road centreline as the fly path, so this option needs to be selected. From the drop down select the  correct road selected. The fly path can also be graphically inputted.

Click OK to continue.

If any of the surfaces specified are not active in the display settings a dialog will appear to inform the user. Click Yes to activate the surface.

Viewing the Fly Path

Terrain Menu › 3D View › View

Select the same surfaces as previously selected.

Click OK to continue.

The 3D view of the project will be shown.

Select AVI output, as shown above if you want the fly through saved as an avi file that can be viewed in Windows Media Player.

Click Start, to view the road in 3D.

The road will now be shown in 3D.

The colour of the road surface can be changed to make it easier to see the road.

Click on the Material tab

Select Constant colour, and select a different colour for the Base and Terrace surface

Click Apply to accept the changes.

To view the road in 3D with the new colours, click on the View tab, and then click on the Start button.
