Adding Symbols to Cross Sections
This tech tip explains how to add CAD symbols to cross sections.
Adding the symbol
Once the cross sections have been extracted, Civil Designer can add symbols to the cross section when the drawing is generated using Plot › Generate.
The existing cross section sheet needs to be modified to enable the placing of symbols.
Editing the Sheet File
Select the Plot › Generate option.

Once the sheet file has been selected, click on the Sheet File Editor button. The current sheet file will open in the editor.

Click on the Drawings tab to continue.

Right click under drawing path to add the required symbol drawing, make sure you select symbol under the type column.
Click on the Cross Section tab to continue.

Click on the Symbols tab to continue.

Lin |
Enter
the line number on which the annotations should
be based. The line number corresponds to the
line numbers in the Cross Section Setup dialog.
An entry of 0 as a line number (which is not
used in the cross sections) will set the
relevant elevation to the datum elevation. Any
offset entered will be then be added to the
elevation. This is useful when plotting an
elevation scale up the side of the section. |
|
Offset- |
Enter
the Offset, PLC or ID (specified in Type column)
where the symbol must be displayed. |
|
-Type |
Specify
whether the entered value in the Offset column
is a point location code, point ID or an offset.
Right-click the cell to alter the current
setting. |
|
Scale |
Enter a
scale factor for the symbol if you want to scale
the symbol manually. Enter a scale of Zero if
the symbols were drawn to scale and the program
will scale the symbol according to the
Horizontal and Vertical plotting scale
automatically. |
|
Name |
Select
the symbol name from the pop-down list. Symbol
will only be listed if a symbol file has been
specified. |
Once the sheet file has been modified, save the file under a new name.

Generating the Cross Section
After the sheet file has been saved, click OK, the new sheet file will now be used to generate the plot.

Click next to continue.

Make the necessary changes i.e. the scale to be used, the pen colours, layers to use for level extraction, start and end chainages. (Please note that the settings above will vary for each project)
Click Finish to generate the drawing.
