Importing Geographical Coordinates

This tech tip explains how to import geographical coordinates into Civil Designer.

Importing the data

Data files of points are sometimes supplied in the form of geographical coordinates. There is an existing function (Geo Topo) for importing geographical coordinates but that function expects a particular file format as generated by GPS processing software. This function imports data files in fixed column or delimited format with the Latitude and Longitude values being either in decimal degrees or in D.MMSS format.

Note: that latitudes in the southern hemisphere and longitudes in the western hemisphere must be entered as negative values.

In Survey Mode

File Menu › Import › Geo Coords

Select the file to be imported, click Open to continue

From the preview, select the correct File Type (NOTE: Preview does not show the whole file)

Click Next to continue.

Click on each column to assign names.

Once the columns have been assigned names, click Finish to continue.

Select the destination surface for the imported points.

The data will then be imported into Civil Designer. Additional information is available in the Civil Designer online help
